My Purpose
Hi and welcome to my website. Let me tell you a little about myself so that you can get a feel for who I am and what motivates me.
First, a bit about my current reality.
From the outside, it looks pretty standard…maybe even a little boring. Married, 2 children, 2 dogs, a home on the Upper North Shore of Sydney (or the “North Snore” as I sometimes call it) and part owner of a wealth planning practice.
From the inside, a little different…well it feels like that to me anyway. I feel like there is only one life (and no matter what one believes about life after death, there can be no denying that this is the life we have to focus on now), and there just isn’t enough time for me to do everything I want to do. I hope I’m only half way because the second half should be a little like playing downhill. I have finally got a little understanding about myself and as a result about others. But more about that later.
Let me take you back to my past – just to set some context.
I grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa and had a very competitive childhood. It was a constant mission to succeed – both on the sports field and academically. I think I did reasonably well in both categories but only much later have I realised how much pressure I kept myself under. It was almost life and death to do well. I can’t honestly say I enjoyed much of it …the outcomes, sure, but not the journey. It was a battle, with the next one always just around the corner. Have a look at my full biography (if you’re interested) and you’ll see that relative to many, I have done quite a lot so far.
My biggest accomplishment has been more recent…in the last 5 years or so. And that’s been all about my relationship with myself. No, I haven’t had a major mental breakdown or illness, I haven’t had therapy (although I wouldn’t have minded – just to digress for a second, it always amazes me how we are quite happy to engage someone to help us with small insignificant, easy things like golf, a technical subject or business but not for the more difficult skills like emotional and relationship coaching) and I haven’t seen the light. It’s been a journey, a slow one at that but one which has provided me with a much greater understanding of myself and a much greater awareness of what’s going on for others.
Come with me on this journey and I’m sure we’ll have some fun and learn from each other. One word of warning before you do – apparently I have a fairly unique combination of left and right brain. Just as many people I know think that I am conceptual and big picture as others that think I am detailed and analytical. To me both are essential and it all comes down to knowing what’s really important and then designing the approach/plan/strategy with the greatest probability of getting you there.
