Animal Rights

I have always been passionate about animals.

Having grown up with easy access to the African bush, I guess the lessons we can learn from the animal world are many and significant. (Okay, here I go again..digressing that is. It just makes me think that if we as such sophisticated creatures had followed the animal world, we probably wouldn’t get ourselves into so much strife. Animals have a way of keeping things balanced).

Anyway, back to why I love animals.

At a simple and daily level, I guess I find myself much more playful with animals and who doesn’t like having a bit of fun. If the truth be told, I am probably more ‘real’ with animals than with humans.

There’s one other reason. I’ve always been a ‘rescuer’ – someone who feels it necessary to protect and help those who they feel need their help. From what I understand, it’s not all good. (let’s get to that later).

Voiceless is an organisation that has taught me a lot about animals and how cruel we as humans are to helpless creatures. I have to admit that the information is staggering. Voiceless do some wonderful work so have a look at their website to learn about what I think will be the next major social movement (after the abolition of slavery, women’s rights and gay rights).

Let me give you one quite example – did you know that animals actually have no rights? There are laws which in effect prevent humans from being cruel to animals but all the ‘production’ animals are exempt. In other words, we can do whatever we like to an animal which is in effect a product. Here’s the Voiceless website
